The students in Social Work Practice III at University of North Texas have organized a 5K to fundraise for the non-profit organization, Communities In Schools.
The 5K will be held in North Lakes Park, located at 2001 W. Windsor Dr., Denton, TX. The race begins at 8:00 AM on April 29, 2012.
Communities In Schools helps to reduce high risk behavior in at-risk youth by offering tutoring, mentoring, and resources to students and families in need.
Students and families rely on this non-profit organization to provide dropout prevention, academic enrichment, college preparation, pre-employment training, health services, adult advocates, and parental involvement.
In addition to aiding with school work, they provide supplemental nutrition, filling backpacks with food.
For many students, the only guaranteed meals are provided by the reduced-lunch program, and may have nothing to eat on Saturdays and Sundays. Returning to school on Mondays, they lack the energy and attention to focus in class. Recognizing this problem, C.I.S. sends food-filled backpacks home with these students on Fridays, so that they do not have to go hungry over the weekend, and they are returned on Mondays to be refilled and redistributed by the end of the week.
Communities In Schools lost all of their funding in the budget cuts during the 2011 Texas legislative session.
The Social Work program at University of North Texas is fundraising for this organization, and by raising awareness and involving the community, we hope to assist Communities In Schools rebuild the money that they lost so that they may continue providing this vital service to the children of Texas.
This race will be manually timed.
